Why is Britain running away from Europe? Some pros and cons for doing so

"Great Britain used to play a key role in leading Europe, and the benefits have been substantial. But now, the UK is turning its back on the EU and has chosen to focus on peripheral issues. It is the wrong move."

So says Will Straw, who like his father Jack, is a British Labour Party luminary, and not surprisingly a dedicated socialist, who laments the Brexit vote to remove Britain from the European Union, rather than continue its integration into the continental socialist world.

"Britain should re-think its approach to the EU," says Mr Straw in article in Germany's top news magazine, Der Spiegel.

Euro will not endure unless structural reform of the trading bloc is undertaken

THE euro and the European Central Bank are in serious trouble. While two men with equal expertise agree with the diagnosis the differ on the prescription.

On one side is there is 91-year-old Jacques Delors, former president of the European Commission and whose last report on the situation remain toweringly influential. He says the way out is to create supranational government to enable true co-ordination of the all the elements required to effect positive change.

Not so, says Otmar Issing, the ECB's first chief economist and a towering figure in the construction of the single currency. He does not have a prescription, but he is certain the one offered by Mr Delors isn't. He says it forget the lessons learnt from the English Civil War and the American Revolution.

Cutting into European, Mideast and African cargo crime through an EU-wide secure parking scheme

IN the area of transport crime, law enforcement in Europe and elsewhere is largely seen as yet another cost of doing business rather than a source of moral outrage.

That's because there are so many impositions, excises and exactions in the course of doing business that little distinguishes one cause of loss from another.

But incident reports show significant year-on-year increases for each of the first nine months of 2016, which is expected to be the worst year for freight thefts in more than five years.

European-Canadian trade deal shows how easily such accords can be derailed

While stifling resistance from Wallonia in French-speaking Belgium passed the Canadian-European Union trade deal, it was a close run thing.

The experience showed how fragile and vulnerable such arrangements are, according to a Bloomberg commentary, which explored the various dimensions of the deal.

In the end, it was signed and the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) passed providing a good result, though with disturbing implications to any hope of passing trade deals like it.
