Maersk Launches Integrated Milazzo Service, Uniting Ocean and Inland Transport Under a Single Solution
Maersk, the world’s second-largest container shipping operator with a fleet capacity of more than 4.7 million TEU, continues to advance its integrated logistics strategy with the launch of a new service at Milazzo, on the northern coast of Sicily. The offering combines the carrier’s inland transportation network with its ocean services, providing cargo owners with a coordinated end-to-end transport solution managed by a single provider.
The new Milazzo service is built to remove the friction that comes from coordinating multiple transport providers across a shipment’s journey. By linking pre-carriage, ocean transport, and on-carriage into one offering, Maersk aims to give shippers a clearer view of their cargo and greater control over their supply chains. For shippers managing high volumes and long-term contracts, these advantages translate directly into the priorities that matter most: cost control, dependable transit, and real-time insight into where goods are at any moment.
As part of the new operating model, all bookings to and from Milazzo will be accepted exclusively on a Carrier Haulage basis. This means Maersk manages the pre-carriage and/or on-carriage transportation connected to the ocean shipment, rather than leaving inland legs to the shipper or a third party.
For cargo owners unfamiliar with the term, Carrier Haulage places responsibility for the inland movement of containers with the shipping line itself. In practical terms, Maersk coordinates the road or rail transport between the port and the shipper’s or consignee’s door, alongside the ocean voyage it already operates.
The carrier said this approach allows it to coordinate the entire transport chain, providing greater operational consistency, improved predictability, and a more streamlined logistics experience.
Why It Matters for Shippers
Supply chain disruptions, rising freight costs, and tighter delivery windows have pushed many cargo owners toward integrated models that reduce the number of parties involved in a single shipment. By taking ownership of both the ocean and inland legs, Maersk positions the Milazzo service as a way to strengthen reliability and simplify a process that often involves several handoffs.
The move reflects a broader industry shift toward end-to-end logistics, in which carriers extend their role beyond port-to-port transport to manage cargo across its full journey. For shippers, the appeal lies in accountability: a single provider responsible for performance from origin to destination.
Milazzo, a port serving Sicily’s industrial and refining sectors, adds another node to Maersk’s Mediterranean network and provides regional shippers with a consolidated route to global markets.
