As we approach the third quarter, it is clear that the good old days of the Covid scare when container slots were sold at a premium and profits were stratospheric, are well and truly over.

This has brought about a sea change in the international shipping market, compounded by a recession in the in the world's leading economies and with tensions building between China and the West.

Dawning of the smart container is upon us - when will it come to dominate the world's ports and supply chains?

In all likelihood smart containers will become as ubiquitous as smart phones if the promises made on their behalf only meet half of their expectations. What gives them an edge is that any container in reasonable shape can become a smart container by installing sensors to monitor its contents with various metrics.

With the advancement of technology, smart containers bring together an array of techniques - Internet of things (IoT), Big Data, Blockchain and data pipelines.
